At A Stroke

Maybe the word 'stroke' derives from the effects that happen to you 'At a Stroke',
because (in most cases) that is what happens. You are suddenly stopped in your tracks and can't do things that you could a few minutes or hours before. It could be just a sensation, the loss of control of limbs, loss of sight ...
and it could last for only 24 hours (TIA - Transient Ischaemic Attack)
or for the rest of your life. It could happen suddenly, or build up over a few days.
